Muslim women talk about the importance of modesty in Muslim culture, the decision to wear or not wear head coverings, and the influence of American culture on young Muslim girls. They also discuss how their faith affects their self-esteem (recorded August 2008).

Jenan Mohajir

Jenan Mohajir
Jenan Mohajir currently serves as the program associate for the Outreach Education Training program at the Interfaith Youth Core, where her primary focus is building relationships between the Muslim community and the Interfaith Youth Movement. Prior to joining IFYC, Jenan was a full-time teacher at the Universal Muslim Day School, a private institution serving primarily Arab Muslim students. She received her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from DePaul University in 2002 with a concentration in Islamic Studies. Jenan is originally from India and grew up in Qatar and the United States.

Carli Ann Marie Pierson

Carli Ann Marie Pierson
Carli Ann Marie Pierson converted to Islam at the age of 19. She was the first person in the United States to earn her bachelor's of arts degree in Islamic World Studies from DePaul University in 2006. Since then, she has worked in media and education. This fall, Carli will begin her first year as a law student at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Naazish YarKhan, a writer, editor, and NPR commentator with more than 15 years of experience, is also an expert in interracial and interfaith initiatives. The founder of Refugee Assistance Programs, a non-profit based in Illinois, she serves on the Advisory Board of Poetry Pals, a cross-cultural initiative for school children.
