Dalkey Archive Press

If you love books and book stories, you know that the publishing industry is changing. Major chains are closing and e-books have the book industry wondering about the future of print. But there's one publisher who seems unfazed by all of this.

The Dalkey Archive Press in central Illinois publishes 50 new books every year and maintains more than 500 titles in print. It's located in Champaign, Illinois and is associated with The University of Illinois. It's a nonprofit press and magazine that is devoted to literature and translations.

The press is named after a novel by Flann O’Brien, the Irish comic writer who died in 1966. Dalkey is an Irish coastal town the book takes place in.

It was started by John O’Brien in the 1980s when he realized the writers he cared about the most were not in print, and he wanted them at first to be acknowledged and reviewed by the magazine, and then reprinted. There are now hundreds of titles. O’Brien is a former Chicagoan who has forged close relationships with many writers, including David Foster Wallace.
