It is not true that "downstate" school districts do not contribute to the TRS pension. By law, 16% of a teacher's salary must be sent to the TRS pension fund. Although it is theoretically possible that the complete 16% contribution come from the teacher only, my district (HS district 201) and the districts of my suburban teacher friends have contributed. In Chicago, the entire contribution does indeed come from CPS, 1 reason why some of my Chicago teacher friends will not ever consider teaching in the suburbs--they don't want any pension contribution to come from their salary. Please do a better job of investigating the statments of the politicians. It makes me furious to hear that my considerable contibution to the pension system, and the contribution of my district, is ignored completely by the media.
