What's clear is you don't know Andy Thayer. Give it up, quit spinning the "oh dear me, protestors, oh dear oh dear!" meme. This doesn't need to be a crisis. What makes it a crisis is the powers that be who would stifle any form of dissent and shred our First Amendment rights. That's the crisis.

Will a peaceful demonstration turn into a riot? It's up to the police. But remember, in Chicago, police aren't here to create disorder, police are here to preserve disorder--so I guess it's all in the hands of the Mayor.
With 20 plus years in front of university classrooms around the city, I long ago learned that it is more productive to engage concerned and anxious minds than to take a "shut up and sit down" stance. The development of the Mayor's revision of city ordinances regarding public protests has me very concerned regarding needless and provocative repression, alienation of those you real ly want engaged during an election year, and massive public stupidity broadcast around the world. Andy Thayer and others have articulated well some of the possible fallout. Official concern seems to center on vandalism and belligerent/inappropriate/criminalized behavior by protesters.
One idea to consider is setting up a People's Summit/Economic Fest at a non-university space (in my dreams, the Cultural Center), where people could go to hear lectures about international economics and issued related to the talks, information tables with used books for sale or representatives of various protest groups, maybe some political poetry and music -- a place to connect and get some good information in a fun setting. Info on current poetry readings, plays and other cultural events around town at the time dealing with related issues would also be available.
Right now, the G8/NATO summits seems imposed on OUR city, with no consideration that some of the G8/NATO assumptions directly impinge on OUR bound-together futures. Is is not the behavior of a houligan to make a challenge to the possible.

Lori Healy, the same Daley crony who was "installed" to help takeover control over the original independent Chicago 2016 Olympic Bid, following King Daley's whims and creating a total collapse, is proof that this G8/NATO situation is destined to fail.
Even IF some costs are reimbursed by the federal government, those are TAXDOLLARS, not monopoly money. King Rahm's whim to have this event and Emperor Obama's granting of the wish also means a mysterious amount of money will be spent the Chicago Way. Crooks and cronies will get their pieces of the pie.
Meanwhile, normal taxpayers and business are likely to suffer. Unlike the Olympic Games, this is going to be a clear adversarial situation between the people and government fat cats, so while I personally don't wish to see violence, this could turn ugly in a split second.
When is Chicago going to rid itself of the Lori Healy's and the usual cronies? When will they treat their citizens with the most respect instead of foreign leaders and elite business tycoons?

If we had real investigative reporters in this city, the smoke and mirrors would be broken. As a Chicago Officer the training was a joke, but we did get a cute book with stick people. Confusion fills the air while attempting formations, 2-3 year out of date gas masks and plastic shields. The police were told cameras will be on you at all times so don't screw up or your in real hot water. The real scary thing is people who are in command have no command on the street time. If I had a store on Michigan ave, I would have ply wood ready . Just google other g8/NATO protests, that's wha we WILL have regardless of what nice things the mayors people say. Where are 30,000 to 50,000 going to stay at night, not in a hotel. I had so much concern over being assigned downtown ingrained and no equipment I retired 2 years early, and I put 15 years in the military.

CHicago G8/NATO
I never heard of Andy Thayer until tonight's show but it's pretty clear he's looking for confrontation during the upcoming G8/NATO summit!

G8/NATO summit
Certainly, the work of Occupy Chicago with their non-violent teach-ins has been impressive, and certainly should be involved in developing the above

37,000 people hate the CME Group
CME Group was an accomplice to the billion dollar MF Global theft.
So much for the concept of segregated accounts at brokerage firms.
I am sure that some would love to see the CME building burnt to the ground.
