A new report in the journal Pediatrics says a growing number of teens and younger kids are experiencing gender identity disorder. They’re coming to doctors with an interest in changing their gender.
Dr. Robert Garofalo is part of a team at Children's Memorial Hospital that's considering starting a clinic to serve these kids. He joins us on Chicago Tonight at 7:00 pm.

What do you think? If a patient is under 18, is it too early to seek treatment for gender identity disorder? Or is early action key to preventing trauma down the road? Post your comments below or sound off on our discussion board!

No matter where you fall on Transgender issues, bad idea
Obviously there is a wide range of thoughts on transgender issues from those who support transgender people and encourage a sex change to those who believe that transgender issues are a psychological disorder that should be met with psychological counseling and not surgery. Regardless of where you fall on the matter, allowing children under the age of 18 to make such a radical change to their body is not something that should be supported or encouraged. Even if the parents consent to such a procedure, a person should really be of a certain age before they make such an (often) irreversible decision.
Transgender and Children
This is one of the more extreme ideas I have ever heard. In todays society if you even talk about curiosity with being a different sex or having a same sex encounter people are already putting people into a box saying thigs like be who you are or you must be gay. Just because we have those thoughts doesn't mean we are. To push this kind of agenda on a child is wrong. We are just creating more confussion and maybe a life time of pain.
Nobody is PUSHING anything on
Nobody is PUSHING anything on these kids. Watch "I am Jazz." Then you will understand.
Gender Identity & Children
To have an obviously gay doctor make statements such as "being disgusted with a vagina" will only infuriate people to see this as some sort a of progressive/pro-gay agenda. The choice of the speaker to represent the unfortunate condition/situation/disease(?) of these children was not in the most objective manner. Common sense and personal experience tells that the word "child" does not only indicate the physical appearance but also the level of mental development, the lack thereof that is. Gender identity disorder (GID
Gender identity disorder (GID) is a real thing. This is not about body issues of feeling overweight or ugly. These children literally believe they are in the wrong body. Nobody is talking about SURGERY! Nobody is saying that this clinic would give children bottom surgeries to change their gender! It is talking about giving children a chance to use blocks against puberty. For a teenager with GID, growing breasts or hair on their chest is unthinkable. Do you know the suicide rate for people with GID? 50% at least attempt it before turning 20 years old! 1 in 2 thought it was a better idea to kill themselves then live with themselves. With a clinic to help the child and families psychologically we would make this world a better place for these children and their loved ones. I applaud Children's Memorial.
I think it's a healthy idea
I think it's a healthy idea
I am 30 years old and I suffer GID
Whe I think about the way I grow up as a child
I was defeinetely a girl in a boy's body
If I could decide back then I would choose to be a girl
