Italy’s Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, stepped down last fall in the midst of a festering financial crisis. Afterwards, President Giorgio Napolitano has tried to pick up the pieces, appointing Mario Monti to Berlusconi’s seat in an attempt to undo two decades of widespread corruption and poor management. Italy’s economic situation is dire: last year, the national debt amounted to 120 percent of the country’s GDP, the second highest ratio in the entire eurozone.
