Weekend Events Around Town: 3/23 – 3/25

Need some ideas for what to do this weekend? Chicago Tonight knows what’s going on!

An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein
Best known for his childrens’ books and oftentimes surreal all-ages poetry, Shel Silverstein also wrote a number of risqué songs and a series of one-act plays published in Playboy. Some of his more adult sketches were adapted for the stage in 2001, now performed by Devil’s Thumb Productions over the next two weekends. Tickets are $12.

Rick Bayless in Cascabel
Catch our segment on Rick Bayless in Cascabel and want to see more? Running through April 22 at the Lookingglass Theatre, Cascabel features acrobatics, dancing, and of course, Bayless' cuisine, which will be served to the audience and on-stage characters alike. The play stars Bayless as a nameless cook in a Mexican boarding house during the 1940s, whose food has a magical effect on his diners. But his culinary skills seem useless in winning back his long-lost love, Esmeralda, who has no interest in the cook's cuisine. Tickets are $170-$225.

Architect Michael Graves: A Grand Tour
Michael Graves’ household products for Target and his Whistling Bird Teakettle have made him a household name. But, in the 1980s, Graves was already the darling of the architecture world with his “post-modern” buildings that took a playful approach to classical forms. A sudden illness in 2003 left him wheelchair bound. Remarkably, this opened a new chapter in his career, creating better health care facilities and homes for disabled veterans. Geoffrey Baer takes us on a grand tour of the life and career of one of America’s best-known architects and product designers Friday at 8:00 pm and Saturday at 11:30 pm on WTTW, Channel 11.
