Rachel Dratch at The Second City
Former Saturday Night Live star and Second City alum Rachel Dratch takes the stage Saturday at her old stomping ground to read from her new book, Girl Walks Into a Bar…Comedy Calamities, Dating Disasters, and a Midlife Miracle. Written as a memoir, the book humorously chronicles Dratch’s post-SNL career struggles, relationship woes, and the recent birth of her son. Dratch is scheduled to stick around post-show for a Q&A and book signing. Tickets are free, but reservations are required.

Chesapeake at Remy Bumppo Theatre
Chesapeake enters its final week at Remy Bumppo Theatre, after being extended through May 6. The play centers around the story of aspiring Southerner-turned-New York City performance artist Kerr and his attempt to seek revenge against conservative Sen. Thurm Pooley through rather unconventional means: the senator’s dog. Shawn Douglass directs and Greg Matthew Anderson stars in Lee Blessing’s one-man comedy that’s rife with satire and political commentary. Chesapeake runs through April 29. Tickets are $30-$40.

Ezra Furman at Schubas
Evanston-based singer/songwriter Ezra Furman’s celebrity has been on the rise after appearances at Austin’s South by Southwest music festival and the release of his first solo album, The Year of No Returning. He’ll bring his confessional, poetic lyrics and folk-twang to Schubas on Saturday for two performances: first at 7:00 pm for an all-ages show, and again at 10:00 pm for a 21+ show. Tickets are $12; $14 at the door.

Chicago Improv Festival
Seventy five Improv teams from more than 15 U.S. cities and five countries converge in Chicago for a week of ad-lib comedy at the 15th annual Chicago Improv Festival. Though CIF, which spans 10 stages across the city, is wrapping up this weekend, there’s still plenty of time to catch a performance or two before Sunday night. If you’re hankering for a taste of the international improv scene, we recommend seeing Switzerland’s Harri Olli Improvised Theatre (7:30 pm Saturday at Athenaeum Theatre) or Mexico’s ImproTOP (10:00 pm Saturday at The Second City Skybox). Spring Desire at Joffrey Ballet
The Joffrey Ballet entered its final performance of the 2011-2012 season earlier this week with the opening of Spring Desire. Billed as “an evening of passion and romance,” the production includes a reprise of famed choreographer Jerome Robbins’s “In the Night” and the world première of San Francisco-based choreographer Val Caniparoli’s “Incarnations.” Chicago Tribune theater critic Sid Smith characterizes the latter as “a feast of acrobatic whirls and speedy turns, one showpiece after another.” The physical prowess of the performers in this final piece is sure to dazzle even the most seasoned of dancer lovers. Spring Desire runs through May 6. Tickets are $30-$149.
