Rep. Joe Walsh's comments denying the medical necessity of abortions received quick condemnations from pro-choice groups around the country.

During Chicago Tonight's candidate forum Thursday night, Walsh said he didn't support abortion in any circumstances, even for the life of the mother. After the forum, he was asked about his position and said due to medical advancements it was never medically necessary to perform an abortion to save a mother's life.

"There's no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing, with advances in science and technology. Health of the mother has been, has become a tool for abortions any time under any reason," Walsh said. "With modern technology and science, you can’t find one instance."

The criticism, from groups like Planned Parenthood and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, prompted Walsh to hold a press conference Friday, where he admitted there were some circumstances, such as an ectopic pregnancy, where an abortion is needed to save the life of the mother.
