Plans are already underway for a special election to fill the seat in the 2nd Congressional District in the wake of Jesse Jackson Jr.'s resignation. We tell you what's next on Chicago Tonight at 7:00 pm.

The potential cost for a special primary and a special election for the 2nd Congressional District is approximately $1 million, according to James P. Allen, communications director at the Chicago Board of Elections. The size of the territory and the number of voters factors into that cost. The 2nd District has 151 full precincts and 19 partials, less than one-tenth of Chicago’s current total of 2,034 precincts.

Allen says that while lessons were learned from the 2009 special primary and special election to fill the vacancy in the 5th Congressional District, certain administrative costs are fixed.

“Trucking companies still charge the same amount for cartage to ship equipment to polling places; we still have the same number of legal notices to publish and web systems to reprogram; we still have X number of pieces of equipment to program and test; Y number of polling places to rent; Z number of judges of election to hire and train; etc,” he said.
