"Today I was informed of Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr.’s resignation as congressman for the 2nd District of the state of Illinois. Within five days, I will set forth a schedule for a special election to allow the people of the 2nd District to choose a new member of Congress to represent them in Washington. This election will be carried out in a manner that is fair to the electorate and as economical as possible for taxpayers. We know that Congressman Jackson is confronting health challenges, and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time."

Mayor Rahm Emanuel:

"While I'm sure this was a difficult decision for Congressman Jackson, now is the time to look forward. The residents of the 2nd Congressional District will now have an opportunity to choose their next leader to fight for all of us in Washington, D.C. My thoughts and prayers are with the Jackson family and I wish Jesse a healthy recovery."

Ald. Anthony Beale (9th):

"The news of Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr.’s resignation is very sad for everyone—his family, his constituents, his colleagues in Congress and the state of Illinois.

For 17 years, Congressman Jackson has done an exemplary job representing the 2nd Congressional District.  Even though Congressman Jackson has not been able to serve since June, due to illness, he still has an outstanding voting record of which he can be proud.

This is a very sad ending to an outstanding career in public office.  In the last few weeks, however, the congressman’s decision to resign appeared inevitable.  The news of Congressman Jackson’s resignation could not come at a worse time for the people of Illinois and the country.  With so much at stake in Washington, those of us who live in the 2nd Congressional District need to have representation as soon as possible.

I only hope the people of the 2nd Congressional District will not be dismayed with the election process in light of recent events following the November 6 election.  We need representation in Washington now more than ever.

I hope our political leaders will work swiftly to prepare for a special election.  In the meantime, my prayers go out to Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., his wife Sandi, and the entire Jackson family at this time of reflection and thanksgiving."
