2014 March Primary Elections

Welcome to Chicago Tonight’s online coverage of Illinois' 2014 March Primary Elections. We’ve gathered information here about the growing Republican and Democratic fields, and some of the key issues in the races. You can read profiles of the candidates, view timelines of their careers, and catch all of their appearances on Chicago Tonight.

In the GOP Senate race, Republican candidates Doug Truax and Jim Oberweis look to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin. Truax blames Durbin for Illinois’ slowed economic growth, employment and fiscal discipline, while Oberweis hopes to bring term limits to Illinois politics.

In the GOP Treasurer race, Bob Grogan looks to be the first State Treasurer with a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) title. Minority Leader of the Illinois House of Representatives Tom Cross plans to run to restore trust and protect taxpayers.

In the Illinois Governor race, incumbent Gov. Pat Quinn is blaming legislature for the lack of progress. Quinn’s opponents claim part of the problem is a lack of leadership from the governor’s office. Another issue is the struggling Illinois economy, and the best way to encourage business growth and lower the state’s unemployment rate.
