Providing Mental Health Care to Children

The Illinois Children's Mental Health Task Force found that nearly 50 percent of Chicago's inner-city teens demonstrated signs and symptoms of depression. As the city's mental health services have been slashed, several organizations and health care providers have teamed up to create Healthy Minds, Healthy Children, Healthy Chicago (H3)--a model designed to blend primary healthcare services with mental health care.
We hear from providers at the UI Health Mile Square Health Center in Englewood about the mental health needs of children in the community and how the new model works.

  • Web Extra: Watch an interview with Bechara Choucair, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, about the new mental health initiative in Englewood, West Town, and Humboldt Park. He believes the program Healthy Minds, Healthy Children, Healthy Chicago is beneficial since half of adults with mental illnesses today showed signs at age 14.
