Navy Pier’s Secretive Spending

Chicago’s biggest tourist attraction, Navy Pier, refuses to reveal how $115 million in government funds are being spent. That’s because operations have shifted from the government-run McPier agency to a private, nonprofit group. That shift is shielding the exact cost of staffers’ rising salaries and bonuses, contracts with vendors and restaurants and a face-lift of the 98-year-old Navy Pier.

We talk with Chicago Sun-Times reporter Tim Novak, who broke the story, and the Better Government Association’s lawyer who filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit to shine some light on Navy Pier operations.
