City to Highlight Architecture with Global Expo

The city renowned for its architecture will host a global exhibit of architecture. Chicago officials announce a bold plan to hold a biennial international design and architecture exhibit in Chicago beginning next year. City officials say they will launch a biennial architecture exposition in October 2015.  It's modeled after the famous biennial in Venice, Italy, and organizers say it will be the largest of its kind in North America.

Mayor Emanuel and a number of luminaries that included architect Jeanne Gang and artist Theaster Gates, made the announcement today at the Cultural Center, which will be the headquarters of the First Chicago Architecture and Design biennial.

It's been in the development stages for about two years. The architect behind it is Cultural Affairs Commissioner Michelle Boone who said she was hired by the Mayor, in part, to come up with big ideas. She also said the Biennial was rapidly embraced by the mayor and the architecture community.
