Battle Begins Over Lucas Museum Location

One day after George Lucas announced that Chicago will be home to the Lucas Museum of Narrative Arts, controversy erupts over its proposed location.

That site is 17 acres along the lakefront which currently contains two parking lots between Soldier Field and McCormick Place. A task force appointed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel chose the site to lure the museum from locating in San Francisco or Los Angeles. And while George Lucas may have made his decision, some city regulations may still stand in the way of the museum being built on the lakefront.

In a statement the Mayor's office released Tuesday, June 24, Emanuel touted the acquisition as a triumph for Chicago saying it will add to the prestige of the museum campus.

"George Lucas has revolutionized the art of storytelling over the last four decades and we are honored to be the recipient of this incredible legacy investment that will allow everyone to learn about and experience narrative arts. Like Marshall Field, John G. Shedd and Max Adler before him, George's philanthropy will inspire and educate for generations. No other museum like this exists in the world, making it a tremendous educational, cultural and job creation asset for all Chicagoans, as well as an unparalleled draw for international tourists."

It will house a large collection of the director's memorabilia not just from "Stars Wars," but other Hollywood movies as well his all-encompassing collection of Norman Rockwell paintings.
