The political game of chicken between Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic lawmakers got even more heated this week as the two sides went toe-to-toe over the issue of freezing property taxes. Illinois has the second highest property taxes in the U.S., according to a report last year from the Urban Institute that examined data from 2007 to 2011. New Jersey has the highest. While property tax relief might seem like a no-brainer, some policy experts warn that a tax freeze could have unintended consequences.
