Based on Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants, The SpongeBob Musical is set to receive a pre-Broadway tryout at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre next June. Co-conceived and directed by Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member Tina Landau, the show will also feature an original score from musical legends like David Bowie, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith.

Additional contributing music artists include Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I.

The show will begin performances June 7 and is set to run a month before opening on Broadway.

Broadway composer Tom Kitt will act as music supervisor, with book by New York’s Kyle Jarrow, who won an OBIE for the 2003 off-Broadway musical A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant.

Tickets for SpongeBob go on sale in October as part of the Broadway In Chicago series.
