49ers Stun Bears 26-20 in Overtime

Playoff hopes dim one week after upsetting Packers

Kicker Robbie Gould missed what would have been a game-winning 36-yard field goal at the end of regulation. Two minutes later the 49ers were in the end zone and celebrating a stunning overtime win over the favored Bears. The loss drops the Bears to 5-7 and makes their playoff hopes statistically improbable – though not completely impossible – with four games remaining in the regular season.

Jay Cutler wasn't as sharp as in recent weeks, throwing a costly pick-six in the first quarter, his third of the season. The Bears defense kept the 49ers in check most of the game, but got burned late on two big scoring plays: quarterback Blaine Gabbert's improbable 44-yard touchdown run and Torrey Smith's 71-yard touchdown catch in overtime.

Notable Quotes:

Quarterback Jay Cutler

On how much settling for field goals had an effect on the outcome: “We had good field position for most of the day. I thought our defense did a heck of a job for us. We’ve got to play better offensively. That starts with me. I know for a fact that we’re not going to like watching the film tomorrow.”

Head Coach John Fox

On how this kind of a loss happens after the big Packers win last week: “It really isn’t what you’ve done last week, it’s what have you done for me lately in this league. You’ve got to be ready every week and you’ve got to perform at a high level. We came up a little short today.”

Kicker Robbie Gould

On how he feels about the two misses: “I feel terrible. I have a job to do, and I didn’t do that today. I hit the ball really well in the first half. I had a lot of confidence going into the last two kicks. I just got quick on both of them. I rushed them; I hurried them. Both are the worst kicks I’ve had all year.”

Notable Stats:

• Rookie defensive lineman Eddie Goldman recorded two sacks, the first multi-sack game of his young career. Goldman added his first career blocked kick, blocking Phil Dawson’s PAT attempt in the first quarter. It was the first blocked extra point by a Bears player since Israel Idonije at Buffalo on Nov. 7, 2010.

• The Bears defense forced a season-high seven three-and-out drives.

• Running back Ka’Deem Carey scored his first career NFL touchdown on a four-yard run in the fourth quarter.

• Running back Matt Forte totaled 123 yards and one touchdown. He had 84 rushing yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, and 39 receiving yards on five receptions. Forte now has 943 yards from scrimmage on the season (676 rushing and 267 receiving) in nine contests played.
