Several high-profile Illinois Republicans are skipping the convention in Cleveland, including Gov. Bruce Rauner and U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk.
But perhaps the highest-ranking member of the Illinois congressional delegation, U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam of suburban Wheaton, is in Cleveland.
“I’m part of a great party, and I want to be active in the vision in moving forward in this great party,” Roskam said. “People are less concerned about who’s participating and who’s coming and they really wanna hear what are the solutions. What’s the vision? What is it that we hope for and what are the aspirations for our country?
“I thought it was important to come and be a participant in these discussions that are happening in Cleveland.”
While GOP Chairman Tim Schneider said Illinois is in “lockstep with Trump,” he doesn’t have Roskam’s support yet.
“I’m leaning towards obviously supporting him,” Roskam said. “I’m going to vote for him. I haven’t endorsed him.”
