Christopher Anthony: Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Candidate, 2-Year Term

WTTW’s 2016 Voters’ Guide to the General Election is an online resource designed to inform voters about the candidates running for office in the Nov. 8 election.

Candidates were given two minutes to tell voters where they stand on the issues, why they feel they are best qualified and what they intend to do if elected or re-elected. The messages were recorded at the WTTW studios at no cost to the candidates. The Voters’ Guide is an online version of Candidate Free Time, pioneered by WTTW in the 1992 race for U.S. Senate. This year’s Candidate Free Time is underwritten in part by the League of Women Voters of Cook County and the City Club of Chicago.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) is governed by a nine-member board elected at-large with three commissioners elected every two years. On Nov. 8, some candidates will run for six-year terms, while others will run for a term lasting two years.

MWRD treats water collected by sanitary and stormwater sewers in most of Cook County. It also serves as the Stormwater Management Utility for Cook County. Its mission is to protect the health and safety of citizens and area waterways.

Candidate Statement

Hi, I'm Christopher Anthony and I'm a Green Party Candidate running for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District commissioner two-year term.

I'm a person who truly believes the government should be operated fiscally as well as environmentally.

Not too many are familiar with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District budget, but they have a billion dollar-plus budget.

And you have to ask if our tax dollars being spent wisely. In a few cases, things could've been done better.

In an October 2015 lawsuit the District paid over $44 million over easement rights in an alley owned by the MWRD.

Did you know the MWRD is the second largest landowner in Cook County? The district owns a lot of property and has a lot of leases that extend to 39 years. Some of which are discounted. We need re-evaluate and also take a look at property and land that's unneeded. If it’s not needed, let’s put it back on the tax roll.

My vision is to use the resources currently that the MWRD has but in a more effective way.

I want to work to establish an independent Inspector General's office that has the power to subpoena and file charges to violators of illegal or unethical standards.

All unneeded property needs to be sold and returned to the tax roll.

And all treated water needs disinfection for the health and safety of everyone. Thank you for the support of my campaign.
