MSNBC’s Chris Hayes on Why Some Americans Live in ‘A Colony in a Nation’

Emmy Award-winning television host Chris Hayes thinks conditions in many parts of today’s United States mirror the ones that led to the American Revolution.

Hayes writes about the drastic disparities between black and white Americans in his just-published book, “A Colony in a Nation.” The book takes its title from part of Richard Nixon’s 1968 speech accepting the GOP nomination for president.

“Black Americans, no more than white Americans, do not want more government programs which perpetuate dependency,” Nixon said. “They don’t want to be a colony in a nation. They want the pride, and the self-respect, and the dignity that can only come if they have an equal chance to own their own homes, to own their own businesses, to be managers and executives as well as workers, to have a piece of the action in the exciting ventures of private enterprise.”

Hayes, the host of “All in With Chris Hayes” on MSNBC and an editor-at-large at The Nation magazine, joins Chicago Tonight on Monday evening for a conversation.
