An investigation by the Chicago Tribune of area water rates has found a disturbing pattern.

Poorer, African-American and Latino communities often pay far more for their water than richer, white communities, despite all the water coming from the same place: Lake Michigan.

Tribune reporters found, for example, that residents of the predominantly African-American suburb of Ford Heights, south of Chicago, pay six times as much for the same amount of water as residents of wealthy Highland Park.

Residents of Evanston pay just $13.71 for every 5,000 gallons of water they use, while in Indian Head Park they pay $87.50.
