Parents have admonished children for making funny faces since about the dawn of time. (“If you keep making that face it’s going to stick!”)
Turns out, it might not be a bad habit.
A new study finds that facial exercises can erase some signs of aging in middle-aged women, a group of whom followed a routine lasting 30 minutes at least every other day for five months and saw as a result fuller upper and lower cheeks, according to the study.
“Now there is some evidence that facial exercises may improve facial appearance and reduce some visible signs of aging,” said the study’s lead author Dr. Murad Alam, a dermatologist and professor of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, in a press release. “The exercises enlarge and strengthen the facial muscles, so the face becomes firmer and more toned and shaped like a younger face.”
As the face ages, the skin loses elasticity and fat pads between the muscle and skin become thinner, causing the face to become saggy.
“But if muscle underneath becomes bigger, the skin has more stuffing underneath it and the firmer muscle appears to make the shape of the face more full,” said senior study author Emily Poon, an assistant research professor in dermatology at Feinberg, in a press release. “Muscle growth is increasing the facial volume and counteracting the effects of age-related fat thinning and skin loosening.”
Women between the ages of 40-65 were taught 32 distinct facial exercises and instructed to perform each of them for about a minute every day for the first eight weeks of the study (for a total of about 30 minutes). For the remaining weeks, they were instructed to perform the 30-minute routine every other day.
One exercise they learned is called the cheek lifter. (Try it yourself: Open your mouth and from an “O,” position upper lip over teeth, smile to lift cheek muscles, put fingers on top part of cheek, release cheek muscles to lower them and lift back up.)

“Facial exercises that may be beneficial include those that entail puckering and squeezing the cheeks,” Alam said. “There are many muscles that collectively allow movement of the cheeks, and our study showed that building these up makes the upper and lower cheeks look fuller.”
Participants’ facial appearances were rated by two dermatologists using a standardized facial aging scale three times during the study: at the beginning, at week eight and at the end. The dermatologists were not aware of the specific exercises or what they were hoping to achieve.
They found that upper and lower cheek fullness was enhanced as a result of the exercises, according to a press release. The dermatologists also estimated the appearance of average patient age decreased over the course of the study, from 50.8 years to 48.1 years.
“That’s almost a three-year decrease in age appearance over a 20-week period,” Alam said.
Of the 27 participants initially recruited, only 16 kept up with the exercises for the full five months. In addition to the small sample size, another limitation of the study was that all participants were middle-aged women, meaning it’s unclear whether the same results would apply to other populations.
“Assuming the findings are confirmed in a larger study, individuals now have a low-cost, non-toxic way for looking younger or to augment other cosmetic or anti-aging treatments they may be seeking,” Alam said.
