Teaching LGBTQ History: New Law Calls for Curriculum Inclusion

July 1 marks the first day that public schools in Illinois are required to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history in their lesson plans. It’s one of many new state laws taking effect Wednesday.

Known as the Inclusion Curriculum Law, it is one of only five such laws across the country, and was signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker in 2019.

We discuss the law with:

— Victor Salvo, founder and executive director of the Legacy Project,  which supports efforts to share LGBTQ history.

— State Sen. Heather Steans, a Democrat from Chicago and sponsor of the bill.

— Jennifer Brier, director of Gender and Women's Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
