What a disappointment that the Members of Congress that we, the people, elected, do not have the fortitude and humility required to reach beyond their personal agendas to help millions of Americans who are in extreme financial need. They are going home with their comfy salaries and to their solidly middle class homes and neighborhoods with no true understanding of how their actions are impacting those of us who have spent countless months searching for employment! Unemployment insurance is important as I struggle having spent my life savings and with easily 30 years left to work in the job force. Congress- wake up, get to work for the American people, not your testosterone!

No. I am puzzled by Mark Kirk's comments. He believes that the Senate should go back to Washington to work out a compromise with the House on extending the payroll tax cuts. But, my impression is that he will vote against such a compromise. More political double-talk.

The Senate should not go back to Washington. It appears that both the Senate and House agree on extending the payroll tax cut. And, we know that Congress cannot easily figure out how to pay for the tax cut. The most logical process would be for the House to pass the two month extension and work out the details on extending it to 12 months in January. However, the House will not call the bill for a vote. Boehner has clearly illustrated why the public hates Congress - he is more interested in political posturing than getting things done.

Why not call it what it is - a 32% cut in contributions to the Social Security reserve fund. This was intended as a one year plan to put more money in take home pay for people who had jobs in 2011. How was it supposed to help create jobs? This "Payroll Cut" should NEVER have been instituted in the first place. Now, in this election campaign season, how can politicians take away a break that most people were not even aware they were given - especially in Illinois because income tax increased by 2 per cent? It appears to be a popularity contest among politicians.
If Social Security is running out of money, why cut contributions? Is this short-sighted - only thinking about the present not the future? Extending this cut in Social Security contributions will only make it harder to make it right next year and subsequent years. It is not being properly reported by the news media.

All year the politicians forcasted the doomsday for Social Security yet they reduce the funding and add more people to receive benefits who never even paid into it.
This is called buying votes..
We need term limits so they don't spend all their time on getting re-elected and focus on whats good for the people of the United States.

Einstein said that insanity is defined by doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. No way can these same obstructionists get anything done that is going to help the 99.5% of Americans, within this short of time. They won't get it done in February either, if the entire last year is any indication. Instead, they should be forced back to their districts, and not allowed to attend any fundraisers or town hall meetings, etc., etc., instead spending their time at food pantries (like the segment so strategically programmed by Chicago Tonight, on tonight's show as well) and with families who would not be able to feed their children and would be out on the street if it wasn't for the meager unemployment $ they receive.
This is not only an issue with their hatred of Obama. They are literally blinded by green - the money that greases the D.C. machinery, but is drowning poor and middle class people. They are blind to suffering and what the crux of our problems are. Until money is removed as the primary factor in campaigns and the day-to-day workings of D.C., we are doomed to more and more and more of the same and I fear a completely broken system - as broken as the spirits of many voters...

Obama and Reid both say that the Senate payroll tax cut has bipartisan support. Simpson (R)-Bowles (D) Is bipartisan and had bipartisan aupport from both the House and Senate.
Obama, Reid and Jay Carney have all lauded the Senate bill as being bipartisan, so surely Obama wouldn't awalk away again from bipartisan Simpson-Bowles?
Given their newfound support for bipartisan legislation, surelyvthey would now support Simpson Bowles.
It is said that Tea Partiers in the House have held the Senate payroll tax cut bill hostafe, but it was said, too, that Progressives held Simpson-Bowles hostage. And there was a decent number of Tea Partiers that would have voted with the moderates in both the House and Senate for Simpson-Bowles.

Sure in these hard times continuing a tax break on mostly middle class workers is a desirable thing. The real problem though is the rest of what is being held up by the same bill - extended unemployment benefits and reduced payments to doctors.
Those who are working and would benefit from the tax cut extension are important. However not extending unemployment benefits could leave thousands (millions?) with no income at all. Cutting Medicare payments to doctors could (by all predictions would) mean that more doctors refuse Medicare patients leaving lots of seniors with no way to get medical services.
As for the two month vs 1 year extension? Of course it should be more than two months. From what we have seen so far though it will take a lot of time (if ever) for the two houses of congress to come to any agreement, meanwhile the tax cut/unemployment/doctor payments will lapse in less than two weeks. Go for the short extention so everything continues and you have two months to hash out a longer solution. (House republicans of course are completely aware of this, so obviously they don't want a resolution at all until everything has lapsed and they hope they can blame that on Democrats.)

I've seen other comments elsewhere talking about High Speed Universities. When I tried to check it out myself, some things didn't work web-wise. I think there's something shady about it. It seems like an ad, but if efforts to investigate run into doors that don't work, it doesn't add up. I don't think this belongs on this Topic list in the first place. WTTW, please investigate.
