(I live in Kenilworth, which is not on your list.) I would gladly pay a higher taxi fare in exchange for feeling safer in a Chicago taxi. Our taxis are far less expensive than those in other countries and even other U.S. cities, and in part because drivers make so little money, passengers are placed at risk. I would rather see more fuel efficient, newer cabs operated by drivers who are paid a fair wage. Better taxi service would also enhance Chicago's image with visitors.

As some one who is a regular rider of taxies in the loop - yes. I wonder if the money you discussed included tips? I know that regular riders give tips that reflect that the meter is not the true value of the trip.

Chicago has the best taxie drivers in the world and we need to support them.

At $1.80 a mile, Chicago has one of the lowest taxi rates among the major US cities. According to TaxiFareFinder, they currently come in at 27th, no where close to other major cities like San Francisco ($2.75), LA (2.70), and Boston ($2.80).

DC just raised rates from $1.50 to $2.16/mile. Even though it is facing mixed responses from taxi drivers, it was long due. When will Chicago be next?
