Health with limited mobility
How do folks with VERY limited mobility manage to get enough exercise to maintain
a healthy heart ?
Heart Scan Question
I am a 54 year old female. I had a heart scan done last year and my overall result was a 197. I had a calcium deposit in one of my arteries. I am currently excersing 30-40 minutes 4-5 days per week and each cold water fish at least 2 days per week. What other things can I do to minimize future heart disease?
Heart Healthy Diet
I'm 58 and as of my last physical all my numbers were in the 'good' range, but I have a serious sweet tooth. If I'm going to eat empty calories, is it better to do it with sweets or starches? Are some empty calories less evil than others?
Diet and cholesterol
I have heard that real butter is better for you than margarines with trans fats. If so, this is the news I've been waiting for! Please comment.
challenging conventional wisdom
What is your view on recent studies/research by people like Gary Taubes and other low-carb and paleo-diet advocates which suggest that conventional wisdom about the lipid hypothesis was based on flawed science by Ansel Keyes?
What about Dr Ron Krauss' meta-analysis that found no link between saturated fat and heart disease? http://www.ajcn.org/content/early/2010/01/13/ajcn.2009.27725.abstract
"Conclusions: A meta-analysis of prospective epidemiologic studies showed that there is no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of CHD or CVD. More data are needed to elucidate whether CVD risks are likely to be influenced by the specific nutrients used to replace saturated fat."
Those specific nutrients that are referenced are likely the carbohydrates (grains) that the USDA has been recommending, as well as the sugar that food companies have used to replace the fat in processed foods.
heart rate
If blood pressure meds keep your heart rate slow can you still benefit from cardio exercise? H
heart attack symptoms
One sees many reports about the vague and lesser known symptoms of heart attack, especially for women (nausea, anxiety, pain in a variety of locations, dizziness, etc.). These lists sometimes seem to encompass almost any sensation above the waist, indeed, one such list I read said literally to have any new sensation above one's waist checked by a doctor. Are there any guidelines for distinguishing the twinges, soreness, stress, etc. that we might experience quite often from potential cardiac symptoms that call for an ER check?
