France

Led by Nicolas Sarkozy and Prime Minister Francois Fillon, France has been a reluctant partner in the NATO mission in Afghanistan. Tensions skyrocketed in January 2012, when an Afghan soldier killed four French personnel on the same day, bringing the number of French troops killed in the war to 82. That month, Sarkozy announced his decision to withdraw French troops from Afghanistan in 2013, instead of 2014, the withdrawal date planned at the last NATO summit in Lisbon.
