NATO

Dating back to 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a strategic coalition of 28 member states in North America and Europe. Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen of Denmark says NATO is “the most successful alliance in history.” The alliance is based on the principle of collective defense, in which a strike against a single member state is considered a strike against all. The combined military spending of NATO members accounts for over 70 percent of the world’s defense spending, though that might change in the wake of a sustained economic crisis. The headquarters of NATO is in Brussels, Belgium.
