Cook County Computers Hacked?

There is concern today that the Cook County employee computer system may have been hacked.

We learned that on Monday Cook County’s Risk Management Department began investigating the filing of unfounded unemployment claims for 5 employees in the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, 8 employees in the Cook County Assessor’s Office, and 1 or more employees in the Cook County Board of Review office.

The fraudulent filings were discovered when the offices were asked to verify unemployment claim requests for employees. The review found that all of the employees were still working and none had made unemployment claims.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s office confirms that the Cook County Inspector General’s Office is investigating the cause of the unfounded claims.

Sources say that there is great concern that the county computer system or the state computer system was hacked, allowing access to the employees' personal information and the filing of the fraudulent unemployment claims.

The county employees affected were told today that their information may have been hacked.
