Discussing U of I’s Job Revocation, the First Amendment

After being offered a tenured teaching position at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Steven Salaita quit his job at Virginia Tech and moved to Illinois. He would have begun teaching at U of I this fall, but on Aug. 1, Salaita, who is Palestinian-American, was informed that the university was revoking its offer.

The decision has created a firestorm of controversy in the academic community, with many believing that the university changed its mind because of Salaita's strident criticism of Israel expressed on his twitter feed. Law professor Brian Leiter of the University of Chicago, who wrote a scathing article about the decision for the Huffington Post joins us to discuss the issue.
