New Archbishop of Chicago

Blase Cupich is now the ninth archbishop of Chicago. The former Bishop of Spokane, Washington was installed this afternoon in an elaborate ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral. His installation completes the transition from his predecessor, Cardinal Francis George, who steps down after 17 years leading Chicago area Roman Catholics. Today's installation marks the first time in Chicago history that a new archbishop replaces one who is still living. We explore the transition process and what can be expected from Archbishop Cupich as he takes on his new flock. Read the program for The Mass of Installation of Archbishop Blase J. Cupich.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel issued the following statement on the installation of Archbishop Cupich:

“On behalf of Chicagoans of all faiths, we thank Cardinal George for his service to our city. We are excited to write a new chapter by welcoming Archbishop Cupich to Chicago. Though we are a city of neighborhoods, our goal is to build a single future as one Chicago, and to do that we will rely on his values and voice – not just on Sundays, but every day. I am confident the entire city joins me in wishing him well as he charts his own course, one that will be guided by a passion for his new city, compassion for others, a sense of renewal, and a spirit of inclusion.“
