Cardinals Blast Bears 48-23

Bears fall to 0-2, Jay Cutler injured

The Carson Palmer-led Cardinals marched convincingly through Soldier Field on Sunday, with the Bears defense hardly able to break their stride. The Bears had never given up as many as 48 points in a home game – until now. And the seven touchdowns allowed tied a Bears franchise record.

The game started on an ominous note, with Cardinals rookie David Johnson returning the opening kickoff 108 yards for a touchdown. Bears quarterback Jay Cutler seemed to have the Bears rebounding nicely, as he started 8-for-8 for 120 yards, despite the absence of top wide receiver Alshon Jeffery (out with a hamstring injury). But then Cutler contributed another chapter to his turnover lore, as Cardinals safety Tony Jefferson intercepted a Cutler pass intended for Martellus Bennett, returned it for a touchdown, and Cutler got knocked out of the game with a hamstring injury trying to tackle Jefferson.

The Cardinals defense picked apart Bears backup quarterback Jimmy Clausen, who finished 14-of-23 for 121 yards and one interception.

Other notable stats:

• The Bears tied a club record with 170 penalty yards.
• Two long pass interference penalties by Kyle Fuller (42 yards) and Alan Ball (38 yards) led to Cardinals touchdowns.
• Bears wide receiver Joshua Bellamy caught a 48-yard touchdown for his first career reception. Bellamy is the first Bears player since linebacker Brian Urlacher on December 23, 2001 at Washington to have his first career reception go for a touchdown.
• Rookie running back Jeremy Langford recorded his first career NFL touchdown on a 1-yard scoring run.
