Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago ranks as the eighth best hospital in the country; Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago comes in at number six in a separate ranking of children’s hospitals in the U.S.

Hospitals are ranked nationally in 16 adult specialties that range from cancer to urology. The higher the ranking a hospital receives on these measures, the more points it receives. Northwestern Memorial Hospital is ranked nationally in 13 adult specialties and one children’s specialty. The top 20 hospitals with the most points are named to the Best Hospitals Honor Roll for 2016-2017.

In addition, hospitals are also rated in nine common procedures and conditions, such as heart bypass surgery, hip and knee replacement and colon cancer surgery. Rather than receiving a numerical score for these measures, hospitals are given a rating of “high performing,” “average” or “below average.” Northwestern Memorial Hospital received high performing ratings for all nine of those measures.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital was also named the top hospital in Chicago metro area and in the state of Illinois for the fifth consecutive year. Three additional Northwestern Medicine hospitals were ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

“With four of our hospitals and 13 clinical care specialties recognized by U.S. News, this is an achievement that further distinguishes Northwestern Medicine as Chicago’s premier academic health system and reaffirms our commitment to providing world-class healthcare to our patients,” Dean M. Harrison, president and CEO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, said in a statement. “This honor again demonstrates the shared commitment of our talented physicians, nurses and staff who provide innovative and high-quality compassionate care.”

U.S. News & World Report also evaluates children’s hospitals. The top 50 pediatric facilities are ranked in 10 specialties from cancer to urology, and those that rank at or near the top in at least three specialties are named to the Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll.

“We are pleased to be ranked the top children’s hospital in Illinois and the only children’s hospital in Illinois to make the Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll for five years in a row,” Patrick Magoon, president and CEO of Lurie Children’s, said in a statement. “Our #6 national ranking reflects the major strides we have made to retain and recruit top pediatric specialists, improve safety, quality and family experience, and advance scientific discovery and innovation.”
