The Week in Review: Chicago’s Soaring Crime Statistics


Arrests were made this week in the murder of Dwyane Wade's cousin. Were the suspects freed too soon after prior convictions? Mayor Rahm Emanuel thinks so. “The criminal justice system is undermining the public safety on our streets,” he said at a news conference this week. He also announced plans for a “major address” on gun violence.

There may be a new agency policing Chicago police officers, as the mayor proposes to replace the embattled Independent Police Review Authority. Oscar and Grammy winner Che “Rhymefest” Smith says Chicago police treated him poorly after a robber mugged him. The video he posted on social media brought an apology from the Chicago Police Department.
