Kent McMillen: Candidate for U.S. Senate

WTTW’s 2016 Voters’ Guide to the General Election is an online resource designed to inform voters about the candidates running for office in the Nov. 8 election.

Candidates were given two minutes to tell voters where they stand on the issues, why they feel they are best qualified and what they intend to do if elected or re-elected. The messages were recorded at the WTTW studios at no cost to the candidates. The Voters’ Guide is an online version of Candidate Free Time, pioneered by WTTW in the 1992 race for U.S. Senate. This year’s Candidate Free Time is underwritten in part by the League of Women Voters of Cook County and the City Club of Chicago.

Candidate Q&A

What is your vision for this office?

To shrink the size of the federal government and put more money in people’s pockets by virtue of lower taxation.

What is the most pressing issue facing constituents, and how can you help address it?

The federal government has grown too big, and as a result the national debt is out of control. We need a comprehensive audit of the federal government and eliminate unnecessary departments and programs, and cut remaining parts down to a size that is necessary. I will be an advocate for downsizing D.C. and will call out other senators who tax and spend lavishly.

Candidate Statement

Hello folks, my name is Kent McMillen. I am a regular guy and the Libertarian party candidate for U.S. Senate.

I’m not an ideologue or a policy wonk. I believe I am practical and have used good judgment in life. The federal government has gotten too big and intrusive and someone has to stand up and say enough. I am that candidate.

I am not a politician. As an elected libertarian, I will not be beholden to major party bosses. I will speak my mind and call out those who squander the taxpayer’s money.

We need a comprehensive audit of the federal government and need to get rid of the tremendous waste and fraud that has built up in the nation’s capital. The downsizing of D.C. will result in lower taxation and will put more money in your pocket.

It’s time to start bringing our troops home from overseas and putting them to work protecting this country. Let’s end the drug war by moving the emphasis from incarceration to treatment and allowing law enforcement to focus on crimes in which there is a victim. Veterans should be able to see their neighborhood doctor without having to deal with the bureaucracy that is the VA. I have no doubt that more than a few MDs will step up to care for our heroes.

I’m not interested in making a career out of elected office. If fortunate enough to win in November, I will serve one term and one term only. I will not spend a dime or a minute on re-election but will devote every day to serving the people of Illinois.

My website is kent4senate.com. Thank you.
