How and When to Talk With Kids About Finances

Talking about money isn’t easy – especially with children. Beth Kobliner, personal finance journalist and New York Times best-selling author, has some tips on how to have that conversation.

Kobliner, who is passionate about teaching people of all ages how to invest in their financial futures, has worked in the personal finance field for three decades. She has written articles on the topic for the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. In 2010, she was selected by President Barack Obama to serve on the president’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability. As part of that role, she educated children on financial literacy.

In April, Kobliner partnered up with “Saturday Night Live” cast member Kate McKinnon to produce a video about teaching finance to children. In the video, McKinnon explains the ins and outs of money to three young children, utilizing examples such as pizza to explain delayed gratification.

Kobliner kicks off the 17th annual Money Smart Week 2018 on Thursday with a free breakfast and talk at the Chicago Federal Reserve. Hundreds of free events take place from Saturday through April 28 and address ways to better manage personal finances.

She joins us in conversation.
