Conservative Author David Frum on the US as a ‘Trumpocracy’

The almost improbable rise of Donald Trump from self-promoting businessman and reality TV star to the highest office in the land was largely due to his success at capitalizing on the sharp resentment between Americans. And he did so at the expense of our democracy. That is one of the key assertions in a new book by leading conservative writer and commentator David Frum.

“Donald Trump is brilliantly tactical, even when he’s not strategic, and he’s better on defense than he is on offense,” Frum said. “When he’s feeling high, he gets sloppy. But when he’s feeling beleaguered, he gets very canny.”

His best-selling book is called “Trumpocracy: The Corruption of The American Republic.”

“I use the phrase ‘Trumpocracy’ to make clear we’re not just talking about a person. This is a big, legalistic, bureaucratic country and the president governs through systems,” Frum said. “And ‘Trumpocracy’ is the story of the systems.”

Frum is also a senior editor at The Atlantic, a contributing editor to The Weekly Standard and he was a speechwriter for President George W. Bush. He joins us in discussion.
