Chicago is literally the crossroads of rail traffic in the United States. In addition to Metra and Amtrak, 25 percent of U.S. freight rail traffic travels through the region.
But the railroad infrastructure here has failed to keep up with the increasing number of passengers and freight traveling by train. It’s resulted in congestion, delays and even environmental issues. However, a new project is underway to address one of the biggest problems in Chicago’s antiquated rail system.
