The hospital also ranks as the 13th best in the country.

U.S. News ranks hospitals across the country in 16 adult specialties that range from cancer to psychology to urology. The higher the ranking a hospital receives on these measures, the more points it receives. Northwestern Memorial Hospital is nationally ranked in 11 adult specialties. The top 20 hospitals with the most points are named to the Best Hospitals Honor Roll for 2018-2019.

“To have Northwestern Memorial recognized again as the top hospital in Illinois and Chicago and among the best hospitals in the country for the seventh year in a row is an honor that we are both proud of and motivated by to continue our quest to be better,” said Julie Creamer, president of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, in a statement. “Recognitions like this are not possible without our physicians, nurses and staff who strive for excellence in all that they do.”

Hospitals are also rated in nine common procedures and conditions, such as heart bypass surgery, hip and knee replacement and colon cancer surgery. Rather than receiving a numerical score for these measures, hospitals are given a rating of “high performing,” “average” or “below average.” Northwestern Memorial Hospital received high performing ratings for all nine of those measures.

Rush University Medical Center was ranked the second best hospital in Illinois, followed by Loyola University Medical Center. The University of Chicago Medical Center and Advocate Christ Medical Center tied for fourth in statewide rankings.

U.S. News & World Report also evaluates children’s hospitals. The top 50 pediatric facilities are ranked in 10 specialties, and those that rank at or near the top in at least three specialties are named to the Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll. Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago made the 2018-2019 Honor Roll, coming in at number 10.

Lurie Children’s Hospital is nationally ranked in 10 pediatric specialties and has been named the top Illinois children’s hospital by U.S. News & World Reports.
