More than 24 hours have passed since Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel stunned the city with his decision not to seek a third term, leaving everyone wondering: what’s next?

“I’ll speak to my cabinet, and tell them to get ready to sprint for the finish line in May,” Emanuel told a handful of reporters Tuesday. “We have more to do, and from now until then, we’ll do everything in our power to get it done and walk out the door hopefully leaving Chicago and Chicagoans in a stronger place.”

Tasks on his to-do list for the next nine months include completing Lakefront bike and running paths, and sealing a contract for a new high-speed train linking O’Hare International Airport with downtown.

As for his personal life, the mayor has kept quiet.

During Tuesday’s press conference, Emanuel said his decision to not run for re-election stemmed from discussions with his wife, Amy Rule, on wanting to “write a new chapter together.”

Emanuel’s announcement also sparked speculation about who else may join the 2019 race for mayor. Within the last day, Ald. Ricardo Muñoz, 22nd Ward, said he intends to run and will have petitions out by Friday.

Speculations of others jumping in include Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, U.S. Reps. Mike Quigley and Luis Gutierrez, and Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza.

Emanuel has refrained from commenting on who he would support for the job. However, he told WGN radio host Steve Cochran he doesn’t think any of the announced candidates has what it takes to be mayor of Chicago.
