City Council was not without its share of fireworks Wednesday as the new guard clashed with the old guard. And in Springfield, a potpourri of major legislation is flying through the General Assembly. New Mayor Lori Lightfoot wasted no time trying to exert her control over the 50-member City Council on Wednesday. After a combative exchange with Ald. Ed Burke, her plan to reorganize the council with new committee chairmanships was overwhelmingly approved.

In Springfield, lawmakers took major steps on several issues, sending items related to a progressive income tax and abortion rights to the desk of Gov. J.B. Pritzker. The fate of other proposals, like legalized recreational marijuana, gambling, an infrastructure bill and a new proposal to expand a tax that funds McCormick Place, are yet to be resolved.
