Jim Oberweis is a veteran of many campaigns: he’s run for Senate – twice – governor and state office. He’s currently the state senator from North Aurora. 

On Tuesday, he beat out several challengers in the Republican primary for the 14th Congressional District, which stretches from the Wisconsin border in McHenry County down through Kane, DuPage and Will counties. 

Oberweis will take on the incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood in November.

“This has been a spirited and well fought campaign,” Oberweis said in a statement to voters. “I have been disappointed in the negative tone that the campaign has taken, but all of that is behind us. Now is the time for us as Republicans to come together and finish the mission which is to defeat Lauren Underwood in November.”

“I thank everyone who came out and voted today, both Republicans and Democrats, as there are many public health concerns weighing heavily on people’s minds,” he continued. “I would also like to thank all of my volunteers, family and staff.”

The seat has historically been held by a Republican until about two years ago, when Underwood broke the trend.

Earlier this month, some Republican representatives filed an FEC complaint accusing Oberweis of taking donations from Republicans for his congressional campaign and then turning around and having the state campaign fund donate to those Republicans.

Oberweis called those claims a “desperation move” and said there was no quid pro quo.

The two will be on the ballot on Election Day, Nov. 3.
