Illinois recorded the highest number of newly reported cases of COVID-19 in a single day with 2,724 cases Friday – almost 700 higher than any other day. Officials attribute the spike to more testing being made available in new locations around the state.
With nearly 1,800 coronavirus-related deaths in the state, Gov. J.B. Pritzker extended the stay-at-home order until May 30 and will require residents to wear masks or face coverings in public where social distancing is difficult.
Cussing punctuated a virtual Chicago City Council meeting in which aldermen approved Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s emergency power ordinance by a 29-21 vote. That tally is the exact same split as during the 1980s “Council Wars” that pitted Mayor Harold Washington and his allies against a white voting bloc. City Council approves David Brown as Chicago’s 63rd police superintendent, but his first move as top cop angers aldermen. And Pritzker rejects Senate Leader Mitch McConnell’s state bankruptcy idea.
