The state’s coronavirus numbers keep breaking records as Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Lori Lightfoot settle their shutdown battle. But with the governor’s rollback of indoor dining, a class action lawsuit gains momentum for those struggling businesses. Meanwhile, other mayors around Illinois and the Illinois High School Association are defying the rollback orders.

With only days left before the election, Lightfoot unveils the city’s plan for possible election unrest. And election officials announce that the United Center will be open as a supersized polling place Tuesday.  

Meanwhile, the candidates make their closing arguments. Will the presidential race be a referendum on the pandemic response? U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin faces challengers, including Republican Mark Curran and Independent Willie Wilson who hasn’t filed Federal Election Commission reports according to a complaint filed by the state’s Democratic County Chairs’ Association.

In the 6th Congressional District, first-term incumbent Sean Casten is facing former Republican state representative and conservative, Jeanne Ives, in a traditionally Republican district. And in the 14th Congressional District, freshman Democrat, Lauren Underwood, is also facing a Republican conservative and state lawmaker, Jim Oberweis, in a deeply red district. Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx is in a pitched battle with Republican challenger, Pat O’Brien, as Lightfoot tweets her support for Foxx.

And finally, after tens of millions of dollars have been spent on both sides, a constitutional amendment to change from a flat tax to a graduated income tax may lose in Illinois even if it gets a plurality of votes.
