Chicago officials are not allowed to release body camera footage or any other materials related to the fatal shooting of police Officer Ella French, according to a court order issued Monday.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said it received the order Monday, which bars “the city of Chicago and its entities” from releasing any materials related to French’s killing under the Freedom of Information Act or the city’s transparency policy.

“COPA remains committed to transparency and is conducting a full analysis and investigation of the incident,” the office said in a statement. “Body worn camera, third party video and other materials related to this incident will be released upon the lifting of the Judge’s order.”

French was shot on Aug. 7 as she and two other Chicago police officers conducted a traffic stop on an SUV carrying brothers Eric and Emonte Morgan in the West Englewood neighborhood.

According to Cook County prosecutors, Emonte Morgan, 21, got into a physical struggle with a male officer and as French came over to assist, Morgan shot both officers. French was fatally struck, while the other officer remains hospitalized with a bullet lodged in his brain.

Prosecutors have said the shooting and immediate aftermath were captured on the officers’ body cameras. Emonte Morgan has been charged with multiple felonies in connection with French’s death, including first-degree murder. Eric Morgan, 22, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and obstruction of justice.

Both have been ordered held without bail.

During a brief hearing Monday morning, a Cook County assistant state’s attorney said Emonte Morgan remains hospitalized after he was shot in the chest by a third CPD officer during a gunfight moments after Morgan allegedly shot French and the male officer.
