The holiday season is in high gear — a time typically marked by family gatherings, delicious food and joyful music. However, this holiday season is the second to be celebrated during the coronavirus pandemic, and it comes as cases surge and concerns about the new omicron variant rise.
Nonetheless, holiday traditions press on, though some celebrations may be different than during typical years.
For Chicago’s Latino communities, some celebrations were held in person this year, while others were still hosted online like the 15th annual Paseo Boricua Parranda.
On Monday, WTTW News reporter Joanna Hernandez moderated the latest edition of our “Chicago Tonight: Latino Voices” community conversation about Latino holiday traditions across the globe and the ways in which Chicago’s Latino community celebrates, and how the pandemic has impacted the holidays.
Hernandez was joined by Julio Paz, chief development officer at Chicago Commons, Lucy Potockti, a Colombian Chicagoan, and Jose Carrasquillo of the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance. He’s the music program manager for the Latin Music Project.
