Nineteen people were shot, three of them fatally, during Chicago’s last full weekend of 2021.

According to the Chicago Police Department, there were 16 shooting incidents across the city between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

Police said a 43-year-old man was killed just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the 2800 block of West Polk Street. The man was standing on the sidewalk when an unknown person exited a dark-colored vehicle and fired shots. The victim was hit in the back and taken to the Mount Sinai Medical Center where he later died.

A 24-year-old man was found fatally shot in the 3000 block of North Avers Avenue just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead on the scene.

A 37-year-old man was shot and killed in the 3900 block of West Madison Avenue at around 3:20 p.m. Sunday. The victim was in a parking lot when an unknown vehicle pulled up and an unknown offender inside that vehicle began firing shots, striking the man in the torso. He was taken to the Mount Sinai Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Chicago police officers were also involved in a shooting incident Friday night. According to a department statement, tactical officers were on patrol in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street at around 10:45 p.m. Friday when they approached two men with handguns.

As officers approached the men, one of them fired at the officers. The officers returned fire, striking the offender, the department said.

One man was shot by police and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A second man was arrested later. One of those men, 29-year-old Nokomis Lee Jefferson, appeared in bond court Sunday and was held on $1 million bail, according to jail records.

No police officers were injured in the incident. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting.
