The Alzheimer’s Association reports that among Black Americans age 70 and older, more than 21% are living with that disease.

Pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly is launching a clinical trial of a new drug therapy for those at risk, and they’re looking for participants in Chicago.

“We know that according to the Alzheimer’s organization, 65% of Black Americans say that they know someone who has Alzheimer’s or dementia. I myself have had experience with Alzheimer’s in my family, both of my grandmothers had either dementia or Alzheimer’s,” said Lashan Neville, manager of clinical innovation and process at Eli Lilly and Company.

At the Black Women’s Expo Chicago, which will take place at McCormick Place beginning Aug. 13, attendees age 65 and older can get a free blood screening to see if they’re at risk for the disease. Neville says they hope the expo will draw exactly the people they want to reach for this trial.

“During the expo, folks from Lilly will come and we will have our mobile research unit on site. Now this is a specialized recreational vehicle and that will allow us to drive increased awareness and increased access to participants or potential participants for our Trailblazer-ALZ 3 study. The intent of the study is to investigate a potential therapy for pre-clinical Alzheimer’s disease patients,” Neville said. “The opportunity to again increase awareness and education and hopefully bring more people into the research realm is something that we’re looking forward to.”
